Kawhi Leonard's trade was a risk-reward deal for the Raptors. Leonard is a top-5 pick in the league, when healthy, and just finished an MVP-caliber campaign. He was injured and only played nine games last year, so there are concerns about his long-term well-being. The Raptors decided the reward was worth taking the chance and signed the deal. So far, Leonard has been healthy and has been playing at an All-Star level. He's averaging 26 points per game, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and shoots 49% from the floor and 38% from three point range. If he can stay healthy, he gives the Raptors a real chance to win an NBA title this season.

The trade for Marc Gasol was more of a short-term move than anything else. Gasol is in his thirties and is clearly out of his prime. Why did NBA leave Vancouver?

Because of a dispute with Vancouver's City Council over arena financing, NBA had to leave Vancouver. The City planned to provide $40 million for the construction of a new arena that would feature 12 luxury suites and two restaurants. The City Council wanted to provide $60 million in taxpayer funds to team owners to repay their existing debt. The city would need to borrow $200 million to construct the arena. However, the owners of the team only had to repay $20 million in debt. This would make it so that the city's tax payers would be responsible to repay the remainder of this loan.

The City Council indicated that they would approve the plan if Rogers Arena was allowed to remain until the new facility is opened. But the league refused to agree, saying the arena wasn't big enough for them anymore. It was too small for them to continue playing there. They felt it was unfair to ask them to keep playing in a smaller venue when they were not getting more revenue.
